Austin is a high-achieving screen writer with an idyllic domestic life. His older brother Lee is an unstable, thieving, ever-wandering hustler. Left alone in their mother’s suburban Los Angeles home, they find themselves back in the vicious patterns that have haunted their family for their entire lives. Lee sabotages Austin’s chance at real success, while Austin challenges Lee’s hyper-confident façade. As their self-destructive behavior spills into the world around them, each man is forced to look squarely at his own limitations, and neither likes what he sees. Finalist for the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
